We’re sleeping out against homelessness
Dé hAoine 11ú Deireadh Fómhair, tá rud beag difriúil ar siúl inár scoil. In áit dul abhaile tar éis an clog deireanach, beidh ár scoil ag malartú ár leapacha te le haghaidh málaí codlata dár Codladh Lasmuigh Scoile mar chuid de Shine A Light Focus Ireland.
Smaoinigh air: níl áit shábháilte le codladh ag breis agus 4,000 páiste inár dtír. Ní féidir leo scíth a ligean ná a bheith saor ó imní tar éis lá fada scoile. Ina áit sin, bíonn siad ag tabhairt aghaidh ar strus agus ar éiginnteacht nár chór go bhfuil aon pháiste ag dul i ngleic leo.
Sin an fáth go bhfuil sé tábhachtach dár scoil páirt a ghlacadh sa Codladh Lasmuigh – is deis é chun taithí bheag a fháil ar na dúshláin a bhíonn os comhair daoine óga atá gan dídean.
Tabhair tacaíocht d’ár mbailiúchán airgid scoile trí dheonú chuig ár leathanach bailiúcháin: tugann gach bronntanas, beag nó mór, sinn níos gaire do thodhchaí ina bhfuil baile agus áit shábháilte ag gach duine.
This October 11, something a little different is happening at our school. Instead of heading home after the final bell, our school will be swapping our warm beds for sleeping bags for our School Sleep Out as part of Focus Ireland’s Shine A Light, proudly supported by Bord Gáis Energy.
It might sound a little crazy, but the reality of homelessness is even more so. Think about it: over 4,000 children in our country don't have a safe place to sleep to call home. They can’t relax and be carefree after a long day at school. Instead, they are faced with stress and uncertainty that no child should have to deal with.
That’s why I think it is important for our school to take part in the sleep out – it’s a chance to experience, in a small way, the challenges faced by young people experiencing homelessness.
Childhood should be about dreams and hanging out with your friends – not wondering where you lay your head at night.
