Myself and Jacob (11) are sleeping out against homelessness

This will be my sixth time sleeping out for Focus Ireland over the past eight years, and the second time my 11-year-old son, Jacob, will join me. Sadly, since my first sleep-out 8 years ago, the number of people experiencing homelessness has continued to rise.

That is why Jacob and I will be sleeping out on Friday, 9 October, as part of Focus Ireland’s Shine a Light campaign. It will be an uncomfortable night, but we know we can return to our own beds the next morning. For far too many children in Ireland, that sense of security simply is not there.

More than 5,500 children in Ireland are currently growing up without a home. Behind that number are children missing out on everyday things many of us take for granted: a quiet place to do homework, friends coming over, family meals together, a community to grow up in and, above all, a safe home to rely on.
