For years, we've watched the homelessness crisis grow in Ireland. Thousands of children are caught in the middle of it, and it's simply not right. They could be sitting in our classes, and we might not even know they're suffering.

So, on Friday 10 October, I'm going to be doing something to help. I’ll be joining my school for a School Sleep Out for Focus Ireland's Shine A Light, trading my cosy bed for a sleeping bag for the night. This isn't just about a single night of discomfort; it’s about raising absolutely critical funds for Focus Ireland to help them meet the growing demand for their services.

More than that, though, it’s about making a stand and saying that having thousands of adults, children and even some older folk without a home is just unacceptable.

For a more personal note, it is often I see, when walking to and from school or to some other place, some homeless person, both young and old, sitting out there in the cold. Sometimes, they just sit in front of a shop and ask for any spare change, or other times have a tent set up in some public area for any sort of shelter from the often unforgiving weather of Ireland. I once even a person once sleeping outside on some grass in a sleeping bag alone, with only trees for shelter from the Irish weather. Every time I see this, I feel awful and sympathetic for these people but even more so when I realise I myself can’t do much about it, for even if I give them all of my spare change it would only be enough to get them by for a day or so and it would not improve their state of living one single bit.

This is why I ask you, from the bottom of my heart, to please donate some money for this cause for if we work together, every little bit we donate together has the potential to change someone’s life from sleeping outside with only a sleeping bag to their name to having a place to live in. For some change that would have been near worthless to us, maybe letting us buy a coffee or protein bar, it certainly could make a difference in somebody else’s life.
